"By knocking Sevilla out of the Champions League,
Fenerbahçe joined a pair of Turkish teams that have made it to the
last eight in European Cups.
Long before Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe enjoyed overseas success,
Göztepe had qualified for the last four of the Inter-Cities Fairs'
Cup, the former name of the UEFA Cup, in 1968-69. Now it plies its
trade in the amateur league, the fifth tier of Turkish football, but
the Izmir side's achievement remains. Galatasaray's first major
success was when it qualified for the European Cup semifinal in
1988-89. Five years later, the Lions qualified for the eight-team
Champions League, stunning Manchester United in the pre-elimination
round. The Istanbul team's climax came in the new millennium, when
it won the UEFA Cup and Super Cup in 2000 and reached the
quarterfinals in the Champions League the following year. "
